Acoma Township, Cedar Mills, and Corvuso

Acoma Township

The trail crosses Acoma Township west of Hutchinson in McLeod County, angling from the southeast corner up to the northwest. This township has a rural agricultural character, but some housing for Hutchinson is starting to sprout. The population of Acoma Township is 1,040.

The trail parallels the Highway 7 right-of-way in this township for almost five miles. This wider publicly owned space has potential opportunities for management of the two adjoining rights-of-way for habitat.

A variety of prairie plant species are evident in the right-of-way in several sites. Local snowmobile clubs and the Luce Line Trail Association have helped with planting trees and shrubs to help retain snow cover, and to enhance the right-of-way.

Cedar Mills

Located in the extreme southeastern corner of Meeker County, Cedar Mills was originally settled as a village in 1860. The community takes its name from Cedar Lake, about two miles to the northeast of the community.

The lake originally had many red cedars on its shores and islands. This is the smallest of the incorporated communities on the Luce Line, with a population of 80 in the city.

A small parking area, small rest stop, plantings, and information board are recommended in this community. Space for these amenities exists within the trail right-of-way just east of the town, with direct access onto Highway 7.

Through the town, the trail is on a city road shoulder for one block, before rejoining the former rail grade.

Just west of the town of Cedar Mills, a major new bridge crossing over the South Fork of the Crow River was installed in 1977. A small wayside rest would enhance this crossing site.

Cedar Mills Township and Corvuso

Five hundred and twenty people live in Cedar Mills Township in Meeker County. The trail parallels State Highway 7 for five miles across this rural agricultural township.

Corvuso is an unincorporated cluster of homes within Cedar Mills Township at the point where Highway 7 veers away from the trail.

Trail ownership within this area is only 85 feet wide, in contrast to the usual 100-foot right-of-way. Situated as it is between Cedar Mills and Cosmos, no facilities are planned for this area.
